Keyword research is a critical step in determining the phrases you want to rank for. Don't pick a keyword that gets too few searches or it won't matter if you rank in the top 10, you won't end up getting any traffic. Alternatively if you pick a keyword that gets a ton of searches you may find that it's also a very competitive phrase and will take a good amount of work to rank for (though it won't be impossible). One of our favorite free tools for keyword search is the Google Keyword Tool. The Google Keyword Tool shows you the estimated search volume by month as well as the last 12 months. This tool is very useful and make sure to switch the match type to "exact" so you can see the real number of searches rather than an estimation (which typically is way too high).
You should also calculate the keyword competitiveness. Some keywords will not result in that many pages being returned by Google, and if it's also a keyword that gets a lot of searches - this would make it a keyword you would want to target. On the other hand if you found a keyword that had a lot of pages returned by Google and not very many searches, you would typically avoid this keyword (unless you knew it was a very high converting keyword). Putting together keyword searches and competitiveness is also known as the keyword effectiveness index.
